HTC May Be Working On A 5-inch 1080p Smartphone: Everything You Need to Know

Sam Byford of The Verge reports on a hands-on preview of the device in Tokyo today, calling its inch full 1080p HD Super LCD 3 screen , "Truly a sight to behold." There have been rumors here about a 5-inch HTC phone for Verizon, but it looks like Japan will beat us to having a living room in our pockets.

You've seen the leaks, but now it's real. HTC and Verizon have just announced the Droid DNA, a 5-inch behemoth sporting an incredible 1080p Super LCD3 display. Powering those pixels is the capable Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, familiar to us as the APQ8064 with 4 Krait cores running at 1.5GHz and last seen in the Nexus 4. For modem, the Droid DNA is using MDM9615 which makes this HTC's first Qualcomm Fusion 3 based device. The Droid DNA also includes ImageChip and the usual ImageSense features, and brings the 2.1 MP F/2.0 camera we saw on the HTC 8X as well. There's 2 GB of RAM onboard as well.

HTC May Be Working On A 5-inch 1080p Smartphone

We have been hearing rumors of an HTC phone with a large 1080p display for a while now and it has finally come true. HTC has unveiled the HTC J butterfly in Japan and it is the first production smartphone to have a 1080p display.

With a full 5-inch screen, this is one of the largest smartphones on the market, but thanks to some thin bezels and edges, it should still be usable by most people. The back is about 9.7mm thick in the middle, tapering off to a scant 4mm on each of the two sides. This, along with a soft rubberized coating, allows for a good grip, much like the HTC 8X. Two red strips littered with tiny holes sit on each side of the phone. Though they may look like a speaker grill, they actually serve no purpose but to candy up the eyes of passersby.

Not too long ago WP devices didn't have as much power under the hood as comparable Android phones. Not in this model. The same quad-core processor and 2GB RAM run the show here. Windows Phone 8.1 looks stunning on a 5-inch full HD 1080p resolution display.

In terms of internal components the HTC One M8 offers some of the best you can find in a smartphone at this moment in time. A Snapdragon 801 SoC and 2GB of RAM power the Android 4.4. OS and images can be viewed and composed on a 5-inch 1080p screen. 16 or 32GB storage can be expanded with MicroSD cards of up to 128GB, so it should take some time before you run out of space for your images and videos. The 2600mAh battery provides enough juice to get you through the day.

Netflix made several appearances at today's Google event, but the most notable is perhaps the announcement that content delivered to Android devices may soon look a whole lot better. Hugo Barra demoed the new Nexus 7, showing off the 1080p content the device will be able to stream from Netflix when it launches in the US on July 30th. Prior to now, Android devices streamed content in standard definition, regardless of their resolution. Following the release of the Nexus 7, the company will roll out 1080p support to additional smartphones and tablets sometime this year.

In case there was any doubt that 5 inches is the new standard for Android superphones, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has removed all of it with a new hardware series. Right at the top of the list is a new device from Panasonic in their relatively young Eluga family, this one christened the ELUGA X P-O2E. The 5-inch LCD screen is naturally 1080p, and hides a 1.5Ghz quad-core Snapdragon Pro processor, and a 13.2 megapixel camera. Colors are a flat black and a more interesting teal, as seen below.

The device retains a similar design to the HTC One (M7), its predecessor in the HTC One series, but features a larger, rounded chassis incorporating a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, a depth of field sensor which can be used to individually refocus and apply various effects to the foreground and background elements of photos taken with the device's camera, a higher resolution front camera, improvements to the device's front-facing stereo speakers, expandable storage, new gesture functionality, and a refreshed version of HTC's Sense software. In August 2014, HTC unveiled a software variant of the device running Windows Phone 8.1 instead of Android, aiming to adapt the operating system's experience to the device "[without] any compromises."[4]

I like that HTC has finally given the power button a noticeably different texture to the volume rocker above it, even if it'd better if the rocker was on the opposite side of the phone. That's where the SIM card and micro SD card (up to 1TB) trays live. I even like the smaller, subtler camera module on the back, as iPhone-like as it is, and that it's centred rather than tucked away to the side. I really like the 5-inch AMOLED screen. It's super sharp thanks to a 1080p resolution (working out to 440 PPI), and it's vibrant and colourful without being over-saturated in the way that Samsung's Super AMOLED screens can be.

With a brushed-metal body with a 5-inch, 1080p Gorilla Glass LCD screen and antennas integrated into the case, the One (M8) sports front-facing Boomsound speakers, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a MicroSD slot. 2ff7e9595c
